Honolulu, HI—Congressman Neil Abercrombie, representing Hawaii’s First Congressional District, released the following statement regarding his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Abercrombie is seeking his 11th full term in Congress.

”Now that the filing deadline has passed, I will formally begin my re-election campaign to the U.S. House of Representatives. I look forward to this campaign as an opportunity to spend more time with the people of Hawaii and justify the responsibility they have given me as an elected official. I want to hear their thoughts and ideas about the many important issues we face as a state and a nation at this pivotal moment in our history.

For me, this campaign also represents an opportunity to report to my constituents on the work I have undertaken on their behalf in our nation’s capital. I continue to work hard to move our state and nation toward energy self-sufficiency through conservation and the development of alternative energy sources. Soon, our bi-partisan House Energy Working Group will release our comprehensive legislation and push for expeditious consideration on the House floor.

As a senior member in the House and chairman of the Armed Services Committee’s
subcommittee on Air and Land Forces, I have secured congressional authorization for more than $3 billion in Hawaii military construction projects, millions more for transportation infrastructure, and support for our visitor industry.

I am proud to have co-authored legislation to create public-private partnerships that will build and maintain thousands of military rental homes — in projects worth billions of dollars — over the next 50 years. These projects are a tremendous benefit to the economy and help to ease competition between civilian and military families in the tight rental market.

There is much that we need to do in the Congress: addressing the global energy crisis, getting our troops out of Iraq, protecting our environment, making affordable housing more accessible to families, addressing our transportation needs, strengthening our national and local economies, and improving the education for our children.

More than ever, we need the kind of leadership and experience that gets things done. I love this state and hope to continue making a difference for the people of Hawaii.”

In the early ’60s before H-1 was constructed, I participated as a student member of the Transportation Committee of the old three-M (Makiki, Mo’ili’ili, Manoa) council in discussions with Mayor Frank Fasi on his rail transit proposal. By my accounting, that means rail transit has at least been before us — unresolved — for going on five decades. As a result, I think I can say with authority that we don’t need yet another study; we need a practical way forward on rail transit…

As the role of moderates in both parties might be on the rise in the debate over gas prices, the early stages of detente could be forming between Senate Democratic and Republican leaders on how to at least proceed on the issue.

House and Senate coalitions of centrists that were formed to work on compromise plans on gas prices were built on growing frustration among the rank and file — and voters — over political gamesmanship employed by party leaders.

This might be leading to more access for these members to party leaders in the debate. House Speaker Pelosi met Tuesday with a group of oil-patch Democrats who recently voted against her "use-it-or-lose-it" plan targeting a lack of production on existing federal areas open for oil and gas production…

Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) said Wednesday that the nation’s energy problem “is more important and threatening to America’s future than terrorism.”

During an interview on C-SPAN, Peterson stressed the need for Congress to act now to address the nation’s energy crisis.

Amid the partisan bickering on Capitol Hill, Peterson and Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) are leading a bipartisan group of lawmakers seeking consensus on energy legislation.

On Wednesday, the lawmakers said that their plan will not call for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

Abercrombie said ANWR has “psychological and political baggage” and Peterson pointed out the group wants to pass a bill this year.

“We can’t do everything,” Peterson said, but stressed that the scope of their package will be broad.

Drilling in parts of the United States, however, is expected to be a key part of their plan…

Five years ago, U.S. Congressman Neil Abercrombie decided he would bench-press his age, plus 200 pounds.

He was turning 65.

He surpassed his goal by 10 pounds and decided to wait for another milestone birthday to try the feat again. Now that he’s turned 70, he’s thinking he might attempt a 270-pound lift after the November election.

“The problem, of course, is that every year you get older, you have to lift more, rather than less,” he said…
